Monday 1.23.23: The entire globe witnessed the inclination of the Middle East towards cryptocurrency throughout 2022. Now the trend is seemingly persisting through 2023 as well. Recently, UAE’s Minister of State for Foreign Trade, Thani bin Ahmed Al-Zeyoudi hinted at the inclusion of cryptocurrency in the nation’s trade partnerships and policies in 2023. “We started attracting some of the companies to the country with the aim that we’ll build together the right governance and legal system, which are needed."

Tuesday 1.24.23: El Salvador’s President, Nayib Bukele, said Monday his country has paid back $800 million on an external bond despite concerns last year the country would default due to its “bitcoin bet.” “In the past year, almost every legacy international news outlet said that because of our ‘bitcoin bet,’ El Salvador was going to default on its debt by January 2023,” Bukele tweeted Monday. “Well, we just paid in full, $800 million dollars plus interest.”

Wednesday 1.25.23: French lawmakers have adopted a softened approach to crypto licensing in the country, giving operators more time to meet new Europe-wide stand. France currently has a two-tier regime for crypto firms. All operators must register as crypto asset providers, but they do not have to gain a full license, a process that requires higher levels of disclosure. While around 60 providers have registered with the regulator Autorité des Marchés Financiers (AMF), none have opted for full authorization.

Thursday 1.26.23: Web3 startup Spatial Labs has raised $10 million in its seed funding round, led by Blockchain Capital and backed by billionaire rap artist Jay-Z’s venture capital firm Marcy Venture Partners. Spatial Labs has developed a 13-millimeter microchip called the LNQ One Chip, which can be sewn or embedded into physical fashion items. Each chip can be scanned with a smartphone via near-field communication (NFC) technology, revealing details about the item and creating a digital copy of it for metaverse wearability. Each physical chip is tied to an NFT on Polygon with lots of opportunities for brands to add details or custom content to the chip’s metadata.

Friday 1.27.23: Moody’s Corporation is reportedly planning to develop a scoring system for stablecoins, per reporting from Bloomberg.
