Why Tomorrow’s ADP Report Could Shake the Entire Market

Published

Dan Habib warns that with data frozen by the shutdown, tomorrow’s ADP jobs report could decide if the Fed cuts rates in December.

The U.S. economy is hanging on one critical data point—tomorrow’s ADP employment report. As Dan Habib explained, with the government shutdown now stretching into day 35, the Bureau of Labor Statistics can’t collect jobs or inflation data, leaving the Fed nearly blind heading into its final policy meeting on December 10. Treasury Secretary Scott Besson hinted that funding could be restored this week, but even then, missing data collection means key reports will likely remain delayed for weeks.

Expectations for the ADP report are muted, with forecasts calling for just 24,000 new jobs in October. Three of the last four reports have shown job losses, including –32,000 in September, while wage growth for job switchers slowed from 7.1% to 6.6% — a clear sign that labor demand is cooling. WARN layoff notices, which track large corporate job cuts, have surged to their highest level since the Great Recession, underscoring the economy’s growing fragility.

Habib noted that the stakes couldn’t be higher. The odds of a December rate cut have fallen from 92% to about 65%, and tomorrow’s data could shift those probabilities dramatically. A strong print near 100,000 jobs could kill hopes for easing and send risk assets lower. But a weak or negative figure might fuel a rebound as traders bet the Fed will be forced to cut despite limited data visibility.

Crypto markets are echoing the tension. Bitcoin is down over 20% from its highs, testing support near $99,000, while ETF outflows and a $110 million Balancer hack have weighed on sentiment, pushing the Crypto Fear & Greed Index to 27. Yet optimism remains, with Bitwise and Canary Capital filing amendments that could allow XRP ETFs to debut as early as mid-November — a potential spark for renewed bullish momentum.

As Habib summed it up, tomorrow’s 8:15 a.m. ADP release could be the data point that decides whether the Fed moves confidently toward easing — or stays frozen in the dark.
