Trump Eyes Crypto for Retirement Accounts in Bold Financial Overhaul

Published

Trump proposes unlocking $12.5T in retirement funds by adding crypto and alts to 401(k) plans via executive order.

In a move that could reshape the future of retirement investing, former President Donald Trump is preparing to sign an executive order that would allow cryptocurrency, private equity, and real estate allocations within 401(k) plans. The initiative would direct the U.S. Department of Labor to reevaluate guidance surrounding alternative investment vehicles under the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA) of 1974.

This shift could unlock access to over $12.5 trillion currently held in retirement accounts across the U.S., allowing individuals to diversify beyond traditional stocks and bonds. While the plan is likely to face both political and regulatory scrutiny, its implications are bullish for the broader crypto market. Inclusion in retirement accounts could drive significant demand, particularly from long-term, high-trust investors.

Though still in proposal stage, the move adds to the narrative of institutional crypto adoption. If successful, this executive order could mark one of the most transformative regulatory developments in the history of U.S. digital asset policy.
