Tether Posts $1.5 Billion Q3 Profit as Reserve Buffer Rebounds

A larger cushion behind USDT

Tether reported $1.5 billion in net operating profit for the third quarter of 2026, while its excess reserves climbed to $7.95 billion. The October 30 announcement puts the spotlight on the financial cushion behind USDT after that buffer contracted earlier in the year.

The company said its latest BDO-prepared attestation covers reserves as of September 30. Quarterly operating profit was consistent with the previous quarter, bringing the first nine months to $4.5 billion. USDT issuance remained broadly steady at about $184 billion over that period.

For people using USDT to trade or move dollars between platforms, the reserve buffer is the more practical part of the release. It measures how much reported assets exceed liabilities, giving the issuer room to absorb losses before that cushion is exhausted.

What the balance sheet shows

Tether reported $191,451,091,374 in assets against $183,496,460,904 in liabilities. Of those liabilities, $183,469,787,261 related to issued digital tokens. The difference between total assets and total liabilities was $7,954,630,470.

That surplus is about 4.3% of reported liabilities, calculated from the published figures. Putting the buffer in percentage terms helps explain its scale: nearly $8 billion is substantial, but it sits behind a much larger pool of obligations.

Cryptoprowl reported that excess reserves had reached $8.23 billion at the end of March before dropping to $4.11 billion at the end of June. The September figure therefore represents a strong recovery from the second quarter, while remaining below the earlier peak. The headline increase alone does not explain every movement in that balance.

Treasury income remains central

Direct and indirect U.S. Treasury bill holdings totaled $132.4 billion. Tether said Treasury bills and reverse repurchase agreements generated most of its operating income, with the majority of reserves held in liquid, short-duration instruments.

The business model connects stablecoin demand with conventional money markets. Reserves backing dollar tokens can earn income while those tokens circulate. CryptoBriefing noted that this interest accrues to Tether rather than being passed automatically to USDT holders.

That also creates sensitivity to interest rates. As short-term instruments mature and are replaced, lower available yields can reduce income on a similar-sized reserve portfolio. Higher yields can support earnings. The timing depends on the assets held and their maturities; this release does not provide a forecast for future quarterly profit.

Liquidity matters alongside the surplus

A reserve balance answers how much backing is reported at a particular date. Redemptions raise an additional question: how quickly can that backing be turned into the dollars needed to meet requests?

Short-duration holdings can help with that process, but asset value and immediate access to cash remain separate considerations. A holder selling USDT on an exchange also depends on that venue and its available buyers. The issuer’s reserve report cannot establish conditions on every trading platform.

Chief executive Paolo Ardoino said the reserve strategy is intended to support redemptions when markets and financial systems come under pressure. The larger surplus supports that stated objective, although a quarter-end attestation is a dated assessment. It should not be read as a continuous guarantee of reserve values or future operating conditions.

What the next report can clarify

The next useful comparison will be whether the reserve cushion holds up alongside changes in token issuance and income. If issuance expands, the dollar size of reserves needs to be considered against the larger liability base. If issuance contracts, redemption liquidity becomes especially relevant.

For this quarter, the reported improvement is clear: operating earnings held steady and excess reserves recovered much of their second-quarter decline. Further disclosures will help explain how much of the stronger buffer persists and how changes in short-term yields feed into earnings.
