Stripe & Paradigm Team Up to Build “Tempo,” a Payment-Focused Blockchain

Stripe is quietly developing "Tempo," a high‑performance, Ethereum‑compatible Layer‑1 blockchain for payments with Paradigm’s help.
August 12, 2025 — Stripe is venturing deeper into the crypto world by developing Tempo, a stealth-mode, Layer-1 blockchain purpose-built for payments in collaboration with venture firm Paradigm. The project was revealed through a job posting—now removed—that described Tempo as a “high-performance, payments-focused blockchain” designed from the ground up and fully compatible with Ethereum tooling.
The Tempo team is reportedly small—consisting of just five people—and operates under a veil of secrecy. While Stripe and Paradigm have not publicly commented, industry speculation suggests that Stripe aims to streamline cross-border and merchant payments using blockchain efficiency.
This strategic move builds on Stripe’s recent acquisitions that strengthen its crypto infrastructure: the $1.1 billion purchase of stablecoin platform Bridge in October 2024, and the acquisition of wallet provider Privy in mid-2025. The larger vision appears aimed at consolidating its payment processing capabilities with blockchain innovation—possibly positioning Tempo to supplant legacy systems like SWIFT and make stablecoin rails mainstream.
