Senate Crypto Bill Markup Delayed by Snowstorm, Faces Likely Partisan Vote

Published

A Senate committee delayed its crypto market structure markup due to a snowstorm, but deep partisan divisions still threaten the bill’s path forward.

The Senate Agriculture Committee has postponed its scheduled markup of a major crypto market structure bill after severe winter weather disrupted travel and operations in Washington. The delay pushes the vote back by several days, but weather is only a minor obstacle compared to the political headwinds facing the legislation.

According to individuals familiar with the process, the bill is still expected to move forward largely along party lines. Republican lawmakers appear prepared to advance the measure, while Democratic support remains highly unlikely, underscoring the growing partisan split over how digital asset markets should be regulated.

The proposed legislation would clarify regulatory oversight for cryptocurrencies, particularly expanding the role of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission in supervising digital asset markets. Supporters argue the bill would provide long-needed regulatory clarity and strengthen U.S. competitiveness in financial innovation. Critics, however, contend the framework does not sufficiently address consumer protection, financial stability, or enforcement concerns.

The delay also comes as Congress faces broader legislative pressures, including looming government funding deadlines. Even if the markup proceeds as planned, the bill’s chances of advancing through the full Senate remain uncertain without bipartisan backing.

For now, the snowstorm has merely paused the process—not resolved the fundamental disagreements that continue to stall comprehensive crypto legislation in Congress.
