SEC Chair Atkins Eyes “Innovation Exemption” to Speed Crypto Products to Market

Published

SEC plans “innovation exemption” by year-end to ease crypto product launches—less friction, more legal certainty for new offerings.

SEC Chair Paul Atkins says the agency is working on an “innovation exemption” that could allow digital asset firms to launch new products more quickly and with less regulatory friction, targeting implementation by the end of this year. The exemption would give conditional relief from certain regulatory requirements—especially those that are seen as burdensome or ill-fitted to emerging blockchain-based models—while keeping basics like investor protections and transparency intact.

Atkins says rulemaking will happen in the coming months under this framework, with the goal of giving the crypto industry a more stable and predictable platform to build on. Key markers for what counts under the exemption may include decentralization, self-custody, and whether the technology is sufficiently matured. For crypto investors this could mean faster product launches, less uncertainty, and potentially more experimentation in DeFi, tokenization, and other digital asset spaces.
