RLUSD Enters the Bank Vault as Standard Chartered Expands Dubai Custody

Standard Chartered now holds XRPL-based RLUSD in Dubai, with an LMAX collateral link planned to put those balances to work.

RLUSD Enters the Bank Vault as Standard Chartered Expands Dubai Custody

A Banking Home for RLUSD

Standard Chartered has launched institutional custody for Ripple's RLUSD stablecoin on the XRP Ledger through its Dubai International Financial Centre branch. The bank announced the service on October 12, bringing eligible clients access to custody through a branch regulated by the Dubai Financial Services Authority.

The bank is also working with Ripple and LMAX Group on a planned collateral arrangement. That second step would allow eligible RLUSD balances to support trading while remaining in bank custody. I see this as bullish infrastructure news for Ripple's ecosystem, with the strongest point being the practical financial workflow it is trying to improve.

From Holding an Asset to Using It

Under the proposed model, LMAX would recognise the value of eligible collateral without requiring the underlying RLUSD to move to the trading venue. Standard Chartered says the parties intend to enable this for agreed LMAX products and solutions. Future capabilities still depend on final documentation, testing, applicable rules, internal approvals and jurisdictional readiness.

The appeal is easy to understand. An institution deciding whether to use a digital asset needs to think beyond the token itself. It also needs a workable answer for where that asset sits, how it is controlled and how it supports the rest of the institution's activity.

In my view, connecting those decisions is where a custody announcement becomes more interesting. Holding a balance is one step. Being able to use that balance efficiently within an approved trading process gives a treasury or operations team a clearer reason to evaluate the asset.

The proposed separation between custody and trading is worth watching, but it should not be read as eliminating risk. The commercial terms, valuation process and treatment of losses would still matter. A useful structure needs to work when markets are under pressure as well as when activity is routine.

The Stablecoin Case Becomes More Practical

Decrypt reports that RLUSD launched in December 2024 on Ethereum and the XRP Ledger, and that this custody service covers the XRPL version. Its report placed RLUSD's market capitalisation at roughly $2.45 billion, below 1% of a stablecoin market worth about $306 billion. Those are reported snapshots rather than fixed measures of its future position.

For me, the more useful question is what makes a business choose one stablecoin over another. Availability is part of that decision, but so are dependable service providers, clear processes and a reason to keep using the asset after the first transaction.

A larger supply figure can attract attention. A repeatable use case can help explain why that supply might be needed. That is why I am more interested in whether institutions eventually put these balances to work than in treating a single market-share number as a verdict on the project.

The strongest outcome would be customers finding the arrangement useful enough to include it in ongoing operations. That would be more persuasive than a launch announcement on its own. Until there is evidence of usage, it is sensible to treat the opportunity as promising but still developing.

Why I'm Bullish, and What Comes Next

I am bullish on developments that make digital assets easier for institutions to evaluate and use. A familiar custody relationship can make the operational discussion more concrete. A potential connection to trading collateral adds another reason for clients to consider how RLUSD might fit into their business.

That positive view applies to the infrastructure and adoption opportunity. RLUSD is intended to maintain a dollar value, so its success is measured differently from an appreciating asset. This announcement also does not by itself establish a specific increase in demand for XRP or a corresponding price move.

The next evidence I want to see is implementation of the proposed collateral service, clarity on eligible products and signs of recurring client use. Custody is already available; the additional trading workflow remains a future step. Together, they offer a constructive direction for RLUSD, with execution determining how much of that opportunity becomes real activity.
