Pakistan Explores Stablecoin Remittances With Trump-Linked Firm

Published

Pakistan signs MOU with an affiliate of Trump-linked World Liberty Financial to explore using a dollar-pegged stablecoin for remittances.

Pakistan’s government has taken a significant step into digital finance by signing a memorandum of understanding with SC Financial Technologies, a company affiliated with a cryptocurrency venture tied to the family of former U.S. President Donald Trump. The agreement centers on exploring how a dollar-pegged stablecoin — known as USD1 — could be integrated into Pakistan’s emerging digital payments infrastructure, particularly for cross-border transactions like remittances.

Finance officials described the deal as a framework for dialogue and technical cooperation with the State Bank of Pakistan. Under this arrangement, SC Financial Technologies will work with the central bank to study and potentially implement ways for the USD1 stablecoin to operate within the country’s regulated digital payment systems. This includes assessing how the token might be used for remittances — a critical source of foreign income for Pakistan — and for international trade settlement.

The memorandum of understanding was signed in the presence of senior Pakistani leadership and representatives of the firm during a visit by the cryptocurrency project’s executive team. Pakistan’s Finance Minister emphasized that the government’s focus is to engage credible global partners and ensure that any innovation aligns with the country’s regulatory framework, financial stability objectives, and national interest.

Stablecoins like USD1 are digital tokens designed to maintain a stable value by being pegged to traditional assets — in this case, the U.S. dollar. These instruments can offer faster and more cost-efficient movement of funds across borders compared with conventional banking rails, which is especially valuable for remittances sent by overseas workers to families back home.

The initiative reflects Pakistan’s broader efforts to modernize its financial system. Authorities are already working on launching a pilot for a central bank digital currency and finalizing legislation to regulate virtual assets. By studying how a regulated stablecoin could integrate with its financial architecture, Pakistan is joining a growing number of countries investigating digital currency solutions to reduce reliance on cash and improve the efficiency of payments.

This move also underscores a warming of economic and financial ties between Pakistan and the United States. The partnership marks one of the first public agreements between a national government and a cryptocurrency venture linked to a prominent U.S. political figure, signaling interest in exploring regulated digital finance innovation at the sovereign level.

While concrete implementation plans remain in early stages, the collaboration sets the stage for potential pilots and future integration of stablecoin technology into Pakistan’s cross-border payment ecosystem. It also contributes to global discussions around how digital assets can coexist with traditional financial systems while meeting regulatory and stability requirements.

Overall, the agreement signifies Pakistan’s willingness to explore emerging digital payment models, engage international partners, and position itself on the frontier of digital financial infrastructure development — particularly in areas that could enhance remittance flows and modernize the broader payments landscape.
