Morgan Stanley Brings Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Solana Trading to E*TRADE

Published

Morgan Stanley has completed its E*TRADE crypto rollout, allowing eligible clients to buy, sell, and hold Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Solana through linked zerohash accounts. It is another meaningful step toward direct crypto access inside familiar brokerage platforms.

Direct Crypto Trading Arrives on E*TRADE

Morgan Stanley has completed the rollout of spot crypto trading on ETRADE, giving eligible clients the ability to buy, sell, and hold Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Solana directly through the platform. The service is being delivered in partnership with digital-asset infrastructure provider zerohash, and it moves ETRADE beyond indirect crypto exposure through ETFs, exchange-traded products, and futures.

This is a meaningful development because E*TRADE is not a crypto-native app trying to attract traditional investors. It is a deeply established brokerage platform inside the Morgan Stanley Wealth Management ecosystem. For many investors, the ability to access digital assets from a familiar platform, alongside stocks, ETFs, cash, retirement tools, and research, removes one of the biggest practical barriers to participation.

The Initial Offering Is Purposefully Focused

At launch, E*TRADE clients can trade only three assets: Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Solana. That is a relatively narrow offering compared with many crypto exchanges, but I actually think it makes sense for a first-stage rollout. These are three of the largest and most established digital-asset networks, each representing a different part of the crypto market.

Bitcoin remains the core digital monetary asset and the entry point for a large share of traditional investors. Ethereum is the leading smart-contract ecosystem and remains central to stablecoins, tokenization, decentralized finance, and on-chain settlement. Solana’s inclusion is important in its own right because it shows that Morgan Stanley and E*TRADE are not treating crypto as a Bitcoin-only trade. Solana has become one of the more important high-throughput networks for payments, trading, consumer applications, and on-chain activity.

Starting with a limited list also gives the platform room to build its operational processes around custody, compliance, customer service, execution, and risk controls before expanding further. It should not be read as a verdict on every other asset in the market. It is a sign that major brokerage firms are beginning with the assets they believe are most recognizable, liquid, and manageable for a mainstream client base.

How the Service Works

Eligible E*TRADE clients access crypto trading through a linked zerohash account. Morgan Stanley says clients can view their digital assets alongside traditional investments, which is a major usability advantage for someone who wants a single view of their broader portfolio. The stated price is 50 basis points, or 0.50%, for spot crypto trading.

The account structure matters. This is not self-custody in the way a hardware wallet or personal wallet is self-custody. Digital-asset trading and custody are handled through the separate zerohash account, meaning clients are getting a managed brokerage-style experience rather than directly controlling private keys. That will be a positive for investors who value simplicity and institutional infrastructure, while others will still prefer holding assets in their own wallets.

Transfer functionality is expected later this year. Until that feature is live, the most important distinction is that the offering is designed for buying, selling, holding, and monitoring crypto within the E*TRADE environment. Investors should understand the custody and transfer structure before assuming the service works exactly like a personal wallet or a full-service crypto exchange.

Why This Matters for Mainstream Adoption

The biggest takeaway is not simply that another platform added crypto trading. It is that a major Wall Street institution is making direct spot access part of the standard brokerage experience. Morgan Stanley’s own investor survey found that an established company investors trust was the top factor clients considered when choosing a crypto platform. E*TRADE is clearly leaning into that preference.

Crypto adoption has increasingly moved from the question of whether institutions will participate to how deeply they will integrate digital assets into existing products. ETFs opened a major door for traditional brokerage exposure. Now, direct spot access inside a mainstream brokerage is becoming another layer of that process. Investors no longer need to choose between a traditional brokerage account and a dedicated crypto app in the same way they did a few years ago.

This also raises competitive pressure across the industry. Coinbase, Robinhood, Kraken, and other crypto-focused platforms already offer broader digital-asset functionality. Traditional brokerages have advantages in trust, existing customer relationships, consolidated portfolio views, and their ability to connect investing, banking, retirement, and wealth-planning tools. The next phase will be about who can provide the strongest combination of asset access, fees, liquidity, custody options, education, and user experience.

A Constructive Signal, Not a Reason to Abandon Discipline

I view this as a constructive long-term infrastructure development for Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, and the broader digital-asset market. It expands the number of people who can access these assets through a platform they already know and may already use for the rest of their investments. That does not guarantee an immediate price move, and it does not remove the volatility or risk that comes with crypto investing.

But it does reinforce the larger trend: digital assets are becoming more integrated into the traditional financial system. Morgan Stanley is not launching a niche experiment from the sidelines. It is embedding Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Solana trading into E*TRADE, with zerohash supplying the underlying infrastructure and transfer capability expected to follow later this year. That is the kind of gradual, practical adoption that can matter far more over time than a single day of market headlines.
