MoneyGram and Stellar Double Down on Stablecoins to Power Global Remittances

MoneyGram expands its Stellar partnership, bringing USDC-powered stablecoin payments to more markets and bridging cash with crypto globally.
MoneyGram is taking another major step into the stablecoin era, announcing a multi-year extension of its partnership with the Stellar Development Foundation aimed at scaling real-world stablecoin utility across global markets. The move reinforces a broader push to modernize cross-border payments by blending traditional financial rails with blockchain infrastructure.
At the center of the expansion is MoneyGram’s growing stablecoin-enabled ecosystem, powered by the Stellar blockchain alongside partners like Crossmint and Circle’s USD Coin. The initiative builds on earlier success in Colombia, where users can receive funds into a USD-denominated digital balance, hold stablecoins, and convert them into local currency at MoneyGram locations.
Now, that functionality is expanding into El Salvador, marking the beginning of a wider rollout across Central and South America, with additional markets expected throughout the year. The long-term vision extends beyond the region, with plans to scale the offering globally.
The key innovation lies in how the system bridges digital and physical finance. Customers can receive remittances instantly in stablecoins, store value in digital dollars, and cash out through MoneyGram’s vast retail network—one of the largest cash on/off-ramp systems in the world.
This hybrid model directly targets a critical use case: remittances. Millions of families worldwide rely on cross-border payments, often navigating slow settlement times, high fees, and currency volatility. By leveraging stablecoins, MoneyGram aims to deliver faster transfers, lower costs, and greater control over funds—particularly in regions where access to traditional banking remains limited.
More broadly, the partnership signals a continued shift toward integrating blockchain into mainstream financial services. Stablecoins are increasingly being positioned not just as trading instruments, but as practical tools for everyday payments, savings, and global money movement.
For MoneyGram, this evolution represents more than a product upgrade—it’s a strategic repositioning. By embedding stablecoins into its core infrastructure, the company is building a payment network that can operate seamlessly across fiat and digital currencies, potentially redefining how value moves across borders in the years ahead.
