Mastercard, Ripple & Gemini Explore Using RLUSD on the XRP Ledger to Settle Card Transactions

Published

Mastercard, Ripple & Gemini pilot RLUSD on XRP Ledger to settle card payments—stablecoins could become core for everyday payment rails.

Payments giant Mastercard is teaming up with Ripple and Gemini to pilot settling traditional credit-card transactions using Ripple’s dollar-backed stablecoin RLUSD on the XRP Ledger. The initiative involves issuer WebBank (behind the Gemini Credit Card) and aims to move settlement from legacy rails into regulated blockchain-native rails. The effort is being positioned as one of the first times a U.S. regulated bank uses a public blockchain and stablecoin to settle fiat card payments.

For crypto investors, this matters: it signals stablecoins are shifting from trading tools to actual payment infrastructure, and major legacy firms are treating blockchain as more than just speculative tech. If the pilot succeeds, it could unlock faster, cheaper settlement for card networks and raise demands for token-based rails in consumer finance.
