Jobs Crater as Fed Cut Odds Surge: Why Today’s Data Signals a Major Shift for Markets

Published

ADP shows 32k job losses and four straight months of labor weakening, pushing Fed cut odds near 90%—and opening the door for fresh liquidity.

Today’s ADP employment report didn’t just miss expectations—it rewired the entire macro backdrop in one shot. Instead of job gains, the economy printed 32,000 job losses, marking the fourth negative print in six months and confirming a clear downward trend in labor conditions. When you add up the past four months, the U.S. economy has shed 17,000 jobs in total, a third of the year defined by contraction rather than growth.

And with the BLS jobs report delayed due to the government shutdown, ADP has temporarily become the de facto labor signal. The Fed is just one week away from its rate-decision meeting, and today’s data pushed rate-cut odds to roughly 90%, the highest conviction positioning markets have seen since this tightening cycle began.

Small Businesses: The Canary in the Coal Mine**

The headline number is ugly, but the internals are worse. Small businesses lost 120,000 jobs, by far the largest share. Nearly half of U.S. workers are employed by small businesses, and they’re typically the first to feel stress when credit tightens or consumer demand softens. Medium and large firms can pivot, refinance, or restructure. Small businesses simply cut labor—and today’s data shows they’re doing it aggressively.

Weakness Spreads Across the Economy

Six of ADP’s ten tracked sectors posted job losses. The declines weren’t localized—they were broad, signaling deterioration rather than a noisy data point.

The biggest hit came from professional and business services, shedding 26,000 positions. The only thing keeping today’s report from looking catastrophic was the defensive “always-needed” category:** education and health, which added 33,000 jobs. That’s the equivalent of a life raft, not a recovery.

Wages Confirm the Slowdown

Wage data adds another layer of confirmation.

Job stayers: slowed from 4.5% → 4.4%

Job switchers: fell sharply from 6.7% → 6.3%

The key stat: the premium for switching jobs is now just 1.9%, the weakest differential in roughly five years. When companies are desperate for talent, they pay up. When they aren’t—they don’t. Today’s wage data screams reduced labor demand.

Why This All but Locks In a Fed Cut

Markets were already leaning toward a cut next week. Now they’re practically pricing it in. Historically, when odds get this high this close to the meeting, they’re rarely wrong.

The only thing that could shake this path is Friday’s PCE inflation report. But even there, the data looks supportive:

Shelter components are cooling

PPI inputs feeding into PCE were tame

Core PCE is expected to hold steady, and Dan believes it may even come in a tenth lighter year-over-year

If PCE confirms or cools further, the Fed has a clean runway.

A Liquidity Shift Is Underway

More liquidity doesn’t always flow directly into crypto and equities—but it usually does. And we’re already seeing signs of risk-on behavior reawakening:

Equities are holding their 50-day and 100-day moving averages

The dollar is slipping below its 50-day

Bond markets are stabilizing

Bitcoin is forming a W-style reversal off support

If the Fed cuts next week, liquidity conditions ease immediately. Financial conditions loosen. Borrowing costs fall. And the “risk premium” that has strangled markets for 24 months begins to unwind.

The takeaway

This wasn’t just another jobs miss. It was the first loud confirmation that the labor market is cracking—and that the Fed’s tightening cycle has officially squeezed hard enough to force a pivot.

If PCE cooperates Friday, next week’s cut won’t just be likely. It’ll be the start of a new chapter for risk assets.
