Japan’s Big 3 Banks Greenlight Yen-Stablecoin Trial, Targeting March 2026 Launch

Japan’s top banks gain approval for yen-stablecoin trial, aiming for a March 2026 launch—crypto rails inch into mainstream finance.
Japan’s three largest banking groups—Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group (MUFG), Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group (SMFG), and Mizuho Financial Group—have received regulator approval to launch a proof-of-concept trial for a joint yen-pegged stablecoin. The initiative, backed by Japan’s regulatory authorities, aims for practical rollout by March 2026, covering both intra-company and inter-company payments initially.
The project will explore multi-bank issuance and testing of regulatory compliance, reserve backing, and technological infrastructure—potentially paving the way for broader digital-asset issuance from traditional financial institutions. While the initial focus is the yen-stablecoin, the banks indicated future possible expansion into other currencies.
For crypto investors, this development signals a major step toward mainstream institutional adoption of stablecoins in a major economy. As banks take the lead, tokenized money is moving closer to traditional finance rails rather than remaining a niche crypto product.
