Inflation Heats Up: What It Means for Crypto’s Next Move
Published
Inflation rises to 2.9% YoY, driven by energy costs. Higher rates may pressure crypto short-term but could boost long-term risk appetite.
The December Consumer Price Index (CPI) report revealed inflation rose 0.4% for the month, slightly above expectations, with year-over-year inflation increasing to 2.9%. Rising energy costs (up 2.6% MoM) drove over 40% of the headline inflation, alongside higher food prices. Core CPI rose 0.2%, slightly below estimates, with rent and shelter costs as significant contributors.
Mortgage rates edged up to 7.09%, while purchase and refinance applications showed a rebound, reflecting potential short-term shifts in housing demand.
For risk-on assets like crypto, the higher-than-expected inflation suggests a slower-than-anticipated easing of monetary policy by the Federal Reserve. This may maintain pressure on speculative assets in the near term as markets anticipate continued rate hikes or prolonged higher rates. However, if inflation stabilizes or cools, crypto could regain strength, reflecting improved risk appetite.
