Grayscale Files S-1 to Launch Spot AVAX ETF, Signaling Altcoin ETF Expansion

Grayscale files to convert Avalanche Trust into spot AVAX ETF on Nasdaq—boosting regulated altcoin access if approved.
Grayscale Investments has officially filed an S-1 registration statement with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to convert its existing Avalanche Trust into a spot AVAX (Avalanche) ETF. This effort marks a key step in the firm's broader push to bring altcoin-based investment products into the regulated ETF space.
The new ETF, intended to trade under the ticker AVAX on Nasdaq, would allow both institutional and retail investors to gain exposure to the Avalanche token via traditional brokerage accounts. The fund is structured to support cash-based creations and redemptions, with custody services for AVAX to be provided by Coinbase Custody and administrative oversight handled by BNY Mellon.
This S-1 filing follows an earlier 19b-4 submission by Nasdaq in March, which laid the groundwork for listing the ETF—though final approval from the SEC is still pending. Grayscale’s move is part of a larger trend in the growing demand for regulated crypto exposure, especially beyond the usual Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs. Other asset managers, like VanEck, have also filed similar proposals for spot Avalanche ETFs.
Market analysts remain optimistic: some estimates put the approval odds for AVAX ETFs this year at around 90%, especially following the successful approvals of Bitcoin and Ethereum spot ETFs. If approved, Grayscale's AVAX ETF could significantly boost liquidity and broaden institutional and retail access to Avalanche.
