Google, Coinbase Launch AI Payments Protocol with Stablecoin Rails

Google & Coinbase enable stablecoin payments in AI: new open protocol (AP2) bridges crypto rails with fiat support for agents.
Google is expanding its open-source payments protocol to let AI applications initiate and receive payments—including stablecoins pegged to fiat currencies like the U.S. dollar. In partnership with Coinbase, the Ethereum Foundation, and over 60 companies spanning tech and finance (names like American Express, Salesforce, Etsy among them), the initiative is designed to bridge crypto payment rails with traditional finance.
This update builds upon Google’s earlier work on the Agent2Agent protocol, evolving it into what’s termed the Agent Payments Protocol (AP2), which aims to enable secure, compliant, interoperable transactions between AI agents. AP2 supports multiple payment methods: credit cards, bank transfers, and now stablecoins, offering flexibility while maintaining oversight and alignment with user intent.
With stablecoins in circulation growing rapidly—rising from about $205 billion at the start of the year to nearly $289 billion—this move could accelerate integrations of digital dollars in AI-driven tools. As AI agents become more autonomous, the ability to transact value in real time may unlock new use cases: automated purchases, subscriptions, commerce, or even financial negotiations managed by AI under human oversight.
