Gemini Wallet: A Friendly On-Ramp for Crypto Newcomers
Published
Gemini introduces a sleek wallet with passkey setup and ENS usernames ideal for crypto novices, but limited in features.
1. What Is Gemini Wallet & “Onchain”?
Gemini has launched its new Gemini Wallet, a self-custody crypto wallet integrated with its web dashboard called Onchain. It provides a clean interface for portfolio management and basic trading.
2. Onboarding: Smooth & Speedy**
The wallet offers a passwordless, seed-phrase-free setup using your device’s passkey in seconds. Users also select a .gemini.eth-style username, making onboarding smooth and welcoming.
3. Access & Availability
At present, Gemini Wallet is only available on the web—there’s no mobile app or browser extension yet. Onchain serves as a hub to manage holdings, execute swaps, and access vaults.
4. Vaults & Supported Networks
Funds can be deployed into “Prime” (lower-risk) or “Core” (higher-risk) vaults, which provide yield opportunities. Gemini covers gas fees for essential actions, though it’s not guaranteed this will remain permanent. Supported networks include Ethereum mainnet, Optimism, Polygon, Base, and Arbitrum.
5. Ideal For...
The wallet is best suited for beginners or crypto-curious users who want a simple, modern entry point into self-custody and DeFi.
6. Limitations
While the interface is clean, it’s also fairly basic in functionality. External tools like Uniswap require separate logins, and experienced users may find the wallet too limited for advanced trading or DeFi strategies.
