Fidelity Investments Starts Its Own Stablecoin in a Massive Bet That Future of Banking Is on Blockchain

Published

Fidelity is launching a dollar-backed stablecoin, signaling growing confidence that blockchain rails are the future of banking and payments.

Fidelity Investments is entering the stablecoin arena, marking one of the most significant moves yet by a traditional financial giant into blockchain-native money. The firm is preparing to launch a dollar-backed stablecoin as part of its broader push into digital assets and on-chain financial infrastructure.

The stablecoin will be issued through Fidelity’s digital asset trust entity and is designed to maintain a one-to-one peg with the U.S. dollar, backed by high-quality liquid reserves such as cash and short-term U.S. Treasuries. The token will initially live on public blockchain infrastructure, allowing for near-instant settlement and around-the-clock transferability.

Fidelity’s move goes beyond simple crypto exposure. By issuing its own on-chain dollar, the firm is positioning itself for a future where payments, custody, settlement, and treasury management increasingly migrate to blockchain rails. Stablecoins offer faster settlement, reduced counterparty risk, and global accessibility compared to traditional banking systems.

The launch places Fidelity in direct competition with existing stablecoin issuers, but with a key differentiator: institutional credibility and deep ties to legacy finance. With trillions of dollars under management, Fidelity’s entry signals that stablecoins are no longer fringe crypto tools, but emerging infrastructure for modern finance.

More broadly, the decision reflects a growing belief across Wall Street that blockchain technology will play a central role in the next evolution of banking. As regulation continues to clarify and institutional demand grows, stablecoins issued by major financial firms could become a core bridge between traditional finance and digital markets.
