Coinbase Cuts 14% of Workforce as AI Reshapes the Crypto Business Model

Published

Coinbase slashes 14% of staff as AI boosts productivity and crypto markets cool, signaling a major shift in how exchanges operate.

Coinbase Reduces Workforce

Coinbase is cutting about 14% of its workforce, impacting roughly 700 employees. The move comes as the company adjusts to lower trading activity in the crypto market and looks to streamline operations.

CEO Brian Armstrong said the decision is part of a broader effort to improve efficiency and align the company with current market conditions.

Focus on AI and Efficiency

Coinbase is increasing its use of artificial intelligence across internal operations. According to Armstrong, AI tools are allowing employees to complete tasks faster, reducing the need for larger teams.

The company is also restructuring to operate with fewer layers of management and smaller, more flexible teams.

Market Conditions Playing a Role

The layoffs follow a period of reduced crypto trading volumes, which directly impacts Coinbase’s primary revenue stream. Like many crypto companies, Coinbase adjusts staffing levels based on market cycles.

Despite the cuts, the company stated it remains financially stable and is positioning for long-term growth.

Strategic Direction

Coinbase continues to focus on areas such as stablecoins, tokenization, and on-chain financial services as part of its future growth strategy.

The workforce reduction reflects a shift toward operating more efficiently while investing in these emerging areas.
