Coinbase Adds RLUSD as Ripple Expands Its Stablecoin Reach

Published Oct 28, 2026

A Wider Door Into Digital Dollars

Coinbase is adding Ripple USD, or RLUSD, across its retail app, Coinbase Exchange and Coinbase Prime, giving the dollar-backed stablecoin a broader route into both individual and institutional accounts. Ripple announced the partnership on October 28, with trading and management available from the launch date.

The agreement includes 1:1 conversion from U.S. dollars and supported dollar-denominated stablecoins into RLUSD. Deposits and withdrawals are supported across the XRP Ledger, Ethereum and Base, and Ripple plans to provide liquidity on Base. Access for Coinbase Global Exchange customers, including use of RLUSD as collateral, is set to follow.

That distinction matters. The current announcement expands access and movement of the token. The future collateral feature would add another purpose: allowing eligible customers to use it within trading arrangements that require assets to secure their obligations. The announcement does not establish that this next phase is already available.

Why Distribution Matters

A stablecoin becomes more useful when people can obtain it, transfer it and convert it back without navigating a complicated chain of services. Exchange distribution can reduce that friction, especially when trading, custody and settlement sit within infrastructure customers already use.

For institutions, adding a token to an approved platform can be more consequential than a new ticker appearing on a screen. Treasury teams and trading firms need operating processes around custody, account access, reporting and movement of funds. Integration can make a new asset easier to evaluate within those processes, although each institution still makes its own decision about whether to use it.

For retail customers, the practical significance is simpler: another digital dollar option becomes accessible through an established exchange. Wider availability creates an opportunity for adoption, but it does not tell us how much demand will actually develop.

More Networks, More Choices

Supporting several networks gives users more flexibility over where they hold and move RLUSD. A customer operating on Ethereum may have different needs from one using the XRP Ledger or applications on Base. Offering multiple routes can help the token fit into more existing workflows.

That does not make every route interchangeable. A transfer still needs the correct network and a compatible destination. Nor does support on several blockchains automatically mean liquidity is equally deep on each one. The quality of execution and the ease of conversion will depend on the services and counterparties available in each setting.

The broader implication is that stablecoin competition extends beyond issuing a token. Distribution, usable liquidity and reliable access can determine whether a digital dollar becomes part of routine activity or remains an asset people rarely use.

Keeping RLUSD and XRP Distinct

RLUSD is designed to track the U.S. dollar. Ripple describes its backing as dollar deposits, short-term U.S. Treasuries and other cash equivalents. Its purpose is therefore different from that of XRP, which is a separate digital asset with a market price that can fluctuate.

The Coinbase announcement strengthens access to a Ripple product, but it does not establish a direct or guaranteed increase in XRP demand. Any effect on the wider ecosystem will depend on where activity occurs and which assets particular transactions require.

Reported supply figures also vary across the coverage. Ripple’s partnership release says RLUSD has surpassed $2.4 billion in market capitalization, while The Block reports more than $2.6 billion, citing Ripple. Those are differently reported snapshots; neither should be treated as a fixed measure of future adoption.

The Next Test Is Actual Use

The listing provides a clearer path for RLUSD to reach customers. The more meaningful test now is whether those customers use it repeatedly for transfers, trading and settlement, and whether the planned collateral support arrives.

Growing distribution can help build a stablecoin business, but announcements alone do not establish durable liquidity or customer preference. Coinbase’s integration gives RLUSD another substantial place to compete. Sustained usage will show how much that access translates into a larger role for Ripple’s digital dollar.
