Tokenized Treasuries Go to Work: BNY and Citadel Securities Complete Repo Trade By Matt Brienen Published: 2026-10-14T16:28:03+00:00 ### From Settlement to Financing BNY and Citadel Securities have completed a financing workflow using a tokenized U.S. Treasury. BNY announced the transaction on October 13, describing it as the first use of tokenized assets on a major triparty repo platform. Citadel Securities purchased a two-year Treasury note through BNY on Tradeweb. A digital representation was recorded on BNY's private ledger and settled within minutes, instead of the usual next-business-day cycle. Citadel then used that Treasury as collateral in an overnight repo, receiving cash from BNY. --- ### Why This Matters A repo is a short-term funding arrangement in which securities are sold with an agreement to repurchase them. Triparty infrastructure handles functions such as collateral management and settlement. Here, tokenization connected a Treasury purchase with the next practical step: putting the asset to work to raise funding. The opportunity is better collateral mobility. Faster settlement can shorten the time between acquiring a security and using it for financing, potentially reducing operational friction. That gives institutions a concrete reason to adopt digital asset infrastructure beyond simply issuing tokens. --- ### Progress for Tokenization, With Clear Limits The Block reports that BNY also plans additional digital cash and tokenized deposit capabilities, alongside longer settlement operating hours extending into European and Asian trading hours next year. Those remain plans, separate from the completed repo transaction. For crypto investors, this is a constructive signal for real-world asset tokenization. However, the trade used BNY's private ledger, and the announcement does not identify a public blockchain token powering it. Institutional adoption can advance without creating direct demand for any particular coin. The next thing to watch is whether this workflow expands into repeat usage across more participants.
