Coinbase’s Next Act: Stocks, Perps, Options and AI By Matt Brienen Published: 2026-07-01T18:36:10+00:00 ### Coinbase Is Not Just a Crypto Exchange Anymore Coinbase is making a very obvious push to become a full financial super app, and I think this is one of the more important exchange stories happening right now. The headline is simple: Coinbase does not want to just be the place where people buy Bitcoin, ETH, or a handful of altcoins anymore. It wants to be the place where users trade crypto, stocks, tokenized assets, options, perpetual futures, pre-IPO exposure, prediction markets, AI-driven strategies, and eventually agentic payments all inside one ecosystem. That is a very different business model than “come here to buy crypto.” This is Coinbase trying to become the everything exchange. --- ### Tokenized Stocks Are the First Big Shift One of the biggest announcements is tokenized stocks. Coinbase says it plans to introduce tokenized U.S. stocks for non-U.S. customers, backed one-to-one by the underlying asset. The company says these tokenized stocks are designed to represent true equity ownership, including dividend payouts and shareholder rights, while also bringing the programmability of on-chain markets into traditional equities. Coinbase also says users will be able to trade U.S.-based stocks 24/7, lend shares to earn yield, use shares as collateral, or send them directly to someone else. That is a massive line being crossed. For years, crypto people have talked about tokenizing real-world assets, but most of the early versions felt clunky, niche, or structurally limited. Coinbase pushing tokenized stocks through a mainstream exchange interface gives this category a much bigger distribution path. There is an important caveat, though. These tokenized stocks are not available to U.S. persons right now, according to Coinbase’s own disclosures. In the U.S., Coinbase still needs the regulatory path to fully open before tokenized equities can become a domestic retail product. Reuters reported that the SEC is preparing policy guidance that could allow crypto companies to offer blockchain-based stocks, and Coinbase is one of the firms expected to move when rules allow. So the U.S. story is not “every American Coinbase user gets tokenized stocks tomorrow.” The real story is that Coinbase is clearly positioning for that world. --- ### Pre-IPO Perps Are Powerful, But People Need to Be Careful The feature that probably gets the most attention is pre-IPO perpetual futures. Coinbase says these contracts give eligible traders outside the U.S. price exposure to private companies before they go public, starting with SpaceX, with Anthropic and OpenAI expected to follow. These contracts are USDC-settled, trade 24/7, have no expiry, and are designed to transition into a standard stock perpetual future once the company completes its IPO. This is extremely interesting, but it is also where people need to slow down. A pre-IPO perp is not the same thing as owning private shares. Coinbase’s help documentation says these contracts do not convey ownership, voting rights, or entitlement to actual shares. Before the IPO, the contract references the company’s total equity valuation rather than a normal public share price, because the final public share count may not be known yet. That matters because people can easily see “SpaceX” or “OpenAI” and assume they are getting clean equity-like exposure. They are not. They are trading a derivative based on valuation expectations, liquidity, funding, leverage, and market demand. It can be useful for price discovery, but it can also get very speculative very fast. Reuters reported that SpaceX pre-IPO perps across exchanges saw around $3.2 billion in trading volume and $390 million in open interest from May 17 through June 10, which shows how much demand there is for this type of product. But Reuters also noted concerns around volatility, low liquidity, and the fact that these instruments are not pegged to underlying shares the way tokenized stocks are intended to be. That is why my view is simple: if someone does not understand futures, perpetuals, funding rates, leverage, liquidity, and private-market valuation risk, they should not touch these products. --- ### Options Are Coming Deeper Into the Coinbase Stack Coinbase is also rolling out options trading for both crypto and stocks. The company says crypto and stock options are coming directly to Coinbase in the coming months, giving users more advanced tools for hedging, defined-risk trading, and cross-asset strategies. This is a big deal because options are where more sophisticated market structure starts to show up. Spot trading is simple. You buy or sell the asset. Options add a completely different layer of strategy: hedging downside, trading volatility, structuring defined-risk exposure, selling premium, or creating more complex portfolio setups. For crypto, this matters because Coinbase also now owns Deribit, and Coinbase says it is working to bring together its U.S. spot exchange, international derivatives exchanges, and Deribit into a unified regulated global liquidity pool for spot, perpetuals, and options access. Coinbase also says it is the first CFTC-approved platform to offer global regulated crypto derivatives, including options, to Americans. That is not a small statement. If Coinbase can actually consolidate spot, perps, and options liquidity inside a regulated framework, it becomes much harder to view it as just a simple exchange. --- ### Sector Perps Bring Equity Themes Into Crypto-Style Trading Coinbase is also introducing real-world asset perpetual futures tied to thematic equity indices like AI, China, Defense, and Tech 100. In plain English, that means users can get exposure to entire stock-market themes through perpetual-style products instead of buying individual stocks or ETFs. This is one of the more fascinating bridges between crypto market structure and traditional markets. Crypto traders are already used to perps. They understand long, short, funding, margin, liquidation risk, and 24/7 markets. Coinbase is trying to take that same structure and apply it to equity themes. That could be huge for volume, but it also creates risk. These are not simple buy-and-hold ETFs. Perpetual futures can behave very differently from spot assets because funding rates, liquidity, leverage, and off-hours price behavior all matter. Coinbase itself warns that trading stock perps involves risk, including liquidity risk, especially during nonmarket hours, along with execution and volatility risks. Again, powerful instrument. Not beginner-friendly. --- ### Prediction Markets Are Becoming Part of the Same Trading Interface Coinbase is also expanding prediction markets. The company says it is adding crypto binaries, which let users trade time-boxed “up or down” markets on assets like BTC, ETH, SOL and more across 15-minute, hourly, daily, monthly, and annual intervals. It is also adding “combos,” allowing users to bundle multiple predictions into a single trade across categories like economic data, politics, sports, or player performance. This is another area where the line between investing, trading, and speculation starts to blur. Prediction markets can be useful because they create real-time probability markets around outcomes. But once you combine them with leverage, short time frames, and a retail interface, they can also become very casino-like if users do not respect the risk. Coinbase’s own disclosure says listed futures and swaps, including crypto options and prediction markets, involve substantial risk and may result in the loss of the entire investment. It also notes that leverage can work for or against the trader and that losses can exceed the initial investment. So yes, prediction markets may become a huge product category. But they are not something users should treat casually. --- ### Coinbase Advisor and Agentic Trading Are the AI Layer The other major piece is AI. Coinbase is launching Coinbase Advisor first to Coinbase One members in the U.S. The company describes it as an AI-powered, SEC-registered in-app investment advisor designed to provide professional-grade investment guidance, including help with things like tax-loss harvesting and multi-asset trade recommendations. That alone is interesting, but the bigger long-term piece is Coinbase for Agents. Coinbase says users will be able to give AI agents defined tasks and boundaries, including executing market theses across spot and derivatives or using x402 to pay for premium financial research. Coinbase says users can isolate agents in sub-accounts and set limits around capital allocation, permitted assets, and trade sizes. That ties directly into the agentic payments narrative we have been talking about. It is not just “AI gives you a stock tip.” It is AI agents potentially reading data, paying for information, executing strategies, managing permissions, and interacting with financial rails under user-defined constraints. That is where Coinbase’s financial super app vision starts connecting with x402, stablecoin payments, Base, and broader on-chain infrastructure. --- ### The Business Side: Coinbase Wants to Power Other Companies Too This is not just a consumer app update. Coinbase is also making a business infrastructure push through the Coinbase Developer Platform. The company says CDP gives businesses access to wallet infrastructure, payments capabilities, trading systems, and stablecoin issuance. Coinbase specifically highlighted stablecoin payments, saying nearly $1 trillion in stablecoin volume moved through Coinbase products last year. Coinbase Payments is being positioned as a stablecoin payments stack built on USDC, Base, institutional-grade custody, and APIs. Coinbase also says its payments APIs are agentic-enabled out of the box, with companies like OpenRouter able to accept payments from both humans and AI agents. Coinbase also announced a partnership with AWS to unlock native agent payments on AWS AgentCore. That is the part I think people should pay attention to. Coinbase is not only trying to own the front-end trading relationship with users. It is also trying to become backend infrastructure for companies that want crypto, stablecoins, wallets, payments, and agentic commerce without building everything themselves. --- ### My Takeaway This is Coinbase moving from crypto exchange to cross-asset financial operating system. Tokenized stocks bring equities on-chain. Pre-IPO perps bring private-market speculation into a crypto-native format. Stock and crypto options bring more advanced portfolio tools. Sector perps bring macro themes into perpetual-style trading. Prediction markets bring event-based speculation into the same interface. Coinbase Advisor and Coinbase for Agents bring AI into the decision-making and execution layer. CDP and Coinbase Payments push the whole thing into business infrastructure, stablecoins, Base, and agentic payments. That is a serious strategy. But it also comes with serious risk for users. The more powerful the product set becomes, the easier it is for inexperienced traders to blow themselves up. Tokenized stocks are not the same as normal brokerage shares in every jurisdiction. Pre-IPO perps are not private equity ownership. Perps are not ETFs. Prediction markets are not harmless games. AI agents are not magic money machines. So my overall view is bullish on the direction, but cautious on how people use it. Coinbase is building toward a world where the bank, brokerage, crypto exchange, derivatives venue, wallet, stablecoin rail, and AI trading assistant all collapse into one platform. That is a huge shift for market structure. Just make sure you understand what product you are touching before you click the button.
